Join Avitura for a guided outing focused on searching for migrating shorebirds within Waterloo Region. As water levels drop and exposed mudflats, shorelines, stormwater ponds, wet fields, and reservoir edges become available, species such as sandpipers, plovers, yellowlegs, and dowitchers may stop briefly to rest and feed during their southbound migration.
This outing will focus on careful observation, field identification, habitat use, migration timing, and the subtle differences that make shorebirds both challenging and rewarding to study. Participants will learn how to scan suitable habitat, separate similar-looking species, interpret behaviour, and appreciate the importance of these temporary stopover sites within an inland region.
