The Living Canopy: A Costa Rica Birding Journey

  • The Living Canopy is Avitura’s classic, hub-based Costa Rica birding journey—built for maximum time in the field and minimal time packing, driving, and changing hotels. Over 10 nights, you’ll bird three of the country’s most productive regions: the hummingbird-rich Turrialba foothills at Rancho Naturalista, the species-dense Sarapiquí lowlands with a full-day visit to La Selva Biological Station, and the iconic cloud forests of Monteverde with two full birding days to refine targets and capitalize on weather windows. This itinerary is paced for real birding—early starts, flexible scheduling, and unhurried time at feeders, trails, and mixed flocks—guided ethically and professionally from start to finish. Expect a high diversity of birds, excellent photography opportunities, and a trip design that consistently delivers.

  • Costa Rica is one of the world’s premier birding destinations: a compact country where steep elevation changes compress Caribbean lowlands, lush foothills, and mossy cloud forest into a single, remarkably accessible journey. The Living Canopy is designed to showcase that diversity without the constant packing and long transfers—using a classic hub-based route that keeps you in productive habitat and in the field as much as possible.

Over 11 days, you’ll bird three of Costa Rica’s most iconic regions. In the Turrialba foothills, Rancho Naturalista offers high-yield trails, forest edges, and legendary feeders that bring hummingbirds and forest species into close view. In the Caribbean lowlands of Sarapiquí, you’ll explore rainforest and river corridors and spend a full day at renowned La Selva Biological Station—one of the best places in the country for deep lowland forest birding. The journey then climbs into Monteverde’s cloud forests for multiple full days, giving you the flexibility to work weather windows, revisit hotspots, and focus on missed targets—an advantage many tours simply don’t have.

This expedition is paced for real birding and strong photography opportunities: early starts, unhurried time on the trails, and strategic sessions at proven feeder sites and private reserves. Expect a steady turnover of Neotropical highlights—toucans, trogons, tanagers, antbirds, woodcreepers, and mixed-species flocks—plus the special highland birds that make Monteverde famous. Throughout, guiding is ethical and interpretation-focused, emphasizing behavior, ecology, and responsible wildlife viewing. The result is a Costa Rica birding experience that feels immersive, efficient, and consistently productive.

Ecuador Endemics & Iconics: A Curated Two-Slope Journey

  • A curated, hub-based birding expedition through Ecuador’s most productive elevation gradients—linking high Andean páramo, the Chocó cloud forests of the west slope, and the rich Andean forests of the Amazon-facing east slope. Designed for strong daily coverage with minimal hotel moves, this itinerary maximizes endemics, hummingbirds, and mixed-flock diversity while keeping logistics smooth and time in the field high.

  • Ecuador is one of the most species-dense birding destinations on Earth, where dramatic elevation changes compress entire biomes into a single day’s drive. This Signature Birding itinerary is built to take full advantage of that geography. We base ourselves in a small number of strategically chosen hubs—reducing packing and long relocation days—while using targeted day trips to work key elevations and microhabitats at peak activity periods.

Over ten days, we connect three of Ecuador’s most compelling birding regions: the high Andes for páramo specialists and alpine waterbirds; the west-slope Chocó corridor for cloud forest endemics, hummingbird feeders, and constantly shifting mixed flocks; and the east-slope Andean forests for an entirely different suite of specialties and high-quality flock birding in moss-draped landscapes. The pace is intentionally efficient and species-forward, but never rushed—built for birders who want depth, endemics, and consistent field time, supported by experienced guides and well-planned logistics.

Please note: itineraries may vary slightly due to weather, road access, wildlife activity, or operational requirements. Any adjustments are made with one priority in mind: delivering the strongest possible birding experience.

  • Dates: To be Determind  Duration: 10 Days / 9 Nights
Includes: Accommodations | Ground Transportation | Guiding | Reserve Fees

Day 1 — Arrival in Quito & Welcome Dinner

Arrive in Quito, where Avitura staff meet you for a smooth airport transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, we’ll do light local birding to begin building the trip list and settle into the Andean rhythm. In the evening, join your guides for a welcome dinner, itinerary briefing, and target-species overview for the days ahead.

Day 2 — High Andes: Páramo & Lagoons (Antisana / Papallacta Region)

We start strong with a full day in Ecuador’s high Andes, targeting páramo specialists and high-elevation waterbirds. Expect scenic roadside birding, short walks, and productive viewpoints—an efficient day to lock in species that are difficult to find elsewhere on the route. Return to Quito for a relaxed evening and checklist recap.

Day 3 — Yanacocha Cloud Forest to Tandayapa (West Slope Transition Day)

This morning we bird the upper Andean cloud forest around Yanacocha for hummingbirds, mountain-tanagers, and high-Andean forest specialties. After lunch, we begin our descent onto the west slope, arriving into the legendary Tandayapa/Mindo Road zone—one of the richest birding corridors in South America. Settle into our hub lodging and enjoy optional feeder time before dinner.

Day 4 — Tandayapa Valley Cloud Forest (Mixed Flocks & Feeders)

A full day exploring prime west-slope cloud forest with a mix of trails, roadside stops, and feeder stations. We’ll focus on mixed flocks, canopy activity, and key Chocó-region specialties. This area delivers consistent action with excellent photography potential—especially hummingbirds, tanagers, and iconic toucanets.

Day 5 — Paz de las Aves (Antpittas & Forest Specialties)

An early start brings us to one of Ecuador’s signature birding experiences: close-range views of antpittas and other understory gems in pristine cloud forest. After a focused morning session, we continue birding nearby elevations to widen the day’s species set. Late afternoon returns to our hub with time to recharge, photograph feeders, or review highlights.

Day 6 — West Slope Elevation Sweep (Chocó Endemics + Lower Foothills)

Today is designed for maximum diversity with minimal relocation: we “work the gradient,” birding two or more elevation bands in a single day. This is one of the best strategies in Ecuador for stacking endemics and specialties efficiently—excellent for fast-paced birders who want breadth without changing accommodations.

Day 7 — Cross the Andes to the East Slope (Papallacta Pass & Guango Corridor)

We depart the west slope and cross the Andes via Papallacta Pass, adding high-elevation specialties before descending into lush east-slope forest. Afternoon birding along rivers and temperate forest edges introduces a new hummingbird community and a distinct suite of Andean birds. Settle into our east-slope hub near the Baeza / San Isidro corridor.

Day 8 — San Isidro Region (East Slope Cloud Forest Classics)

A full day in mossy, mid-elevation east-slope cloud forest—one of Ecuador’s most productive habitats for mixed flocks, antpitta possibilities, and high-quality birding in beautiful settings. This region often produces “new families” and standout species that complement the west slope perfectly.

Day 9 — Foothill Extension Day (Road Trip Loop, New Elevations)

We do a dedicated day trip downslope into warmer foothill habitats to expand the species list without moving lodges. This adds a fresh set of birds—often more colorful, more active, and very different from mid-elevation cloud forest. Return to the lodge for a relaxed final evening, recap, and checklist session.

Day 10 — Final Morning Birding & Return to Quito

We enjoy a final morning session close to the lodge (or a targeted stop for any remaining priority birds), then transfer back toward Quito for onward flights. Timing is adjusted to match departure schedules, with strategic birding stops if the flight window allows.

    Trip Highlights

    • Hub-based comfort with serious birding: only three lodging bases across 9 nights

    • Two slope strategy: west-slope Chocó cloud forest + east-slope Andean forest in one trip

    • High-Andes day included: páramo and alpine habitats for specialized targets

    • Antpitta experience option: close-range views and exceptional forest birding

    • High hummingbird diversity: feeders + wild forest encounters across multiple elevations

    • Fast-paced days, minimal packing: more time birding, less time relocating

Please note: Itineraries may vary slightly from the posted version due to weather, local conditions, wildlife activity, road access, or operational requirements. Any adjustments will be made to ensure the best possible experience for all participants.

Ecuador: The Signature Birding Circuit

  • Ecuador: The Signature Birding Circuit is designed for birders who want the full breadth of Ecuador’s diversity without compromise—long, productive days, expert field leadership, and a route chosen for consistency as much as rarity. In a single, carefully sequenced journey, we move through Ecuador’s richest birding regions to maximize species variety across elevations, biomes, and endemism zones—delivering the kind of cumulative checklist growth that only a true “circuit” can provide.

This is a serious birding program built around repeatable success: dawn starts where they matter, strategic positioning for mixed flocks and fruiting trees, and enough time in each zone to capitalize on weather windows and daily bird movement. The pace is purposeful, not rushed—structured to keep you in the field during peak activity while still preserving comfort, logistics, and flexibility. You’ll travel with a naturalist guide focused on sharp identification, efficient habitat reading, and keeping the group on birds—whether that means holding a position for a skulker, working an elevation band for a specialty, or returning to a productive area until it delivers.

If your goal is a high-volume species list, meaningful endemics, and a trip that feels private, polished, and professionally executed, The Signature Birding Circuit is Ecuador at its best: comprehensive, refined, and relentlessly rewarding.
