Through the Lens: Capturing Nature’s Story

Through the Lens: Capturing Nature’s Story is a guided, hands-on outing designed for anyone looking to strengthen their nature photography skills in real field conditions. This experience focuses on the fundamentals of photographing wildlife and landscapes, including composition, light, exposure, and camera settings, with clear, practical guidance that participants can immediately apply in the field. Equal emphasis is placed on ethical photography practices, understanding wildlife behaviour, minimizing disturbance, and making responsible decisions that put the subject and habitat first. Throughout the outing, participants will receive tips and techniques tailored to the conditions and subjects encountered, along with thoughtful discussion on storytelling through images and developing a respectful, observant approach to nature photography. This is a relaxed, instructional outing intended to build confidence, improve results, and foster a deeper connection between photography and nature around us.

In addition to photography instruction, the outing incorporates active species identification throughout the day. As subjects are encountered, participants will learn to recognize and interpret the birds and other wildlife around them, using field marks, behaviour, and habitat cues to better understand what they are photographing. This integrated approach strengthens both photographic storytelling and ecological awareness, helping participants create more informed, respectful, and meaningful images. The experience is supported by take-home reference materials and is intended to build confidence, improve results, and deepen participants’ connection to nature through both observation and photography.
